Press release
DESIGN + EMOTION – Products stirring
emotions
Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe – Museum at Market Square1
August – 2 November 2008Smiling chairs and floating lamps are among the objects
waiting to be discovered at the new special exhibition, “DESIGN + EMOTION.
Products stirring emotions,” organised by the Badisches Landesmuseum from 1
August to 2 November 2008, in the Museum at Market Square. Over 200 items on
display present a new perspective on a variety of products and designs available
to the modern consumer. Detached from traditional classifications of function,
style, materials used or the designer, this exhibition focuses on the visceral
appeal of products and defines the popular concept of emotional design. While
earlier the product function and a suitable design were the relevant criteria
for purchasing an item, consumers today are far more particular when choosing
their products. As far back as the eighties, the design movement has focused on
being visceral and emotional, and products on the market today should offer
something that will touch a consumer to the core – viewing the item or
perceiving it with the senses should have an emotional effect.Objects in the
exhibition are categorised according to the specific feelings they induce. Come
on a voyage of discovery through experiences which will intrigue, astonish,
delight and amuse you. Other sections of the exhibition include self-portrayal
and the sense of self, well-being, uneasiness, disappointment and aggravation.
An emotional roller coaster ride awaits you as you observe your own response to
the items while experiencing them and trying them out. There are exhibition
pieces which give no hint as to their function as well as transparent devices
offering an unusual insight into their inner workings; both have been designed
to pique the curiosity. You can look forward to sights that challenge your
expectations, such as a lamp floating on top of its own cord or a seemingly
solid wooden chair that turns out to be unusually light. Joy and pleasure are
the most frequently recurring themes in the category of positive emotions, which
is why the exhibition features “smiling products” such as the sometimes surreal
combination of life forms and functional objects. Here a bottle opener with a
face or gaudily painted cartoonish chair may greet you, at times with a literal
smile. Evocative names and appealing textures distinguish the products that are
to trigger a sense of well-being. Many of these allow you to adjust the play of
light and colour to your current mood. On a different note, there are also
unsettling items on display, such as a carpet designed with the silhouette of a
murder victim or sweets filled with preserved grasshoppers.
A multifaceted
programme including conversations with designers, after-work guided tours and
events will accompany the exhibition. The Karlsruhe university of arts and
design is organizing a seminar for the duration of the exhibition.

Our Talk Market videos are finally released!!

While we were at ICFF we met Katie Koeblitz from The Talk Market who told us about this very creative new online shopping network -- http://www.talkmarket.com/ It is similar to Amazon.com but better! In Amazon.com people can create a virtual online store to sell their products and The Talk Market took it a step further -- people can create their own TV shopping Channel! How fabulous! We think it's great fun to watch a video of the designer/artist explaining about their product or art work before we buy. Even if we are not buying, it is just fun to watch how all these creative designs/art came about.

Of course we took the opportunity, and with The Talk Market's help, made a couple of videos ourselves to show people how our products were inspired. We want to thank Angel for being our spokes person for these videos. She did a fantastic job and looked amazing!!
